I dont ever remember any jr high or high school trauma attached with group showers as a result, and we were before the "tightywhites shaming" that (from what i hear) took place about 10 years later.įor me i think it was a little bit more awkward to go to swimming classes in jr high, because we were given a color coded, school owned swimsuit to wear during swim class. It was silly at first to see bare butts and boy parts on display, but there wasnt fear attached, just adjusting to doing it, feeling shy at first, and watching the brave boys who had been either raised in a more open home, or had been skinny dipping alot, or who were otherwise attention hogs. I mean just being with your classmates after playing dodge ball in the gymnasium.

Made it a whole lot easier because a class full of naked boys is just rowdy fun and an extension of play time. Mine was in elementary school, I think 4th grade maybe. The towel dance is okay embarrassing to see, but it’s the norm. As a sidenote, I still haven’t found another gym that is that relaxed and open as far as nudity. Nudity was frowned upon during my childhood, as well as during my middle school and high school years. It’s a shame to see the communal showers go to waste. I tried to sign up again and the building is being occupied, but not by another gym. I developed more confidence and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere.
I got really comfortable changing there and showering because it wasn’t abnormal. The shower was communal, and there was regularly 3 to 5 people changing at a time. I didn’t know at the time, but this gym was very relaxed and open with nudity. I joined a gym close to the school with the only intention being to shower after work. The location of the jobsite was so close to the school that it didn’t make sense to drive home and then back to school. I became an apprentice in a construction trade, and had to attend school after work twice per week. My first experience with nudity in the locker room wasn’t until I was 21 years old. (Although it was sadly years before I had the balls to use group showers myself.) I recall the first couple of days, and they were uncomfortable. And it's certainly puzzling why it was a jolt-because I had enough info to know that there was a good chance I'd see nudity. I'm not sure why it was uncomfortable-one possible explanation was that I'd been well programmed that one is always clothed around others, but there hadn't been any exceptions mentioned, like except in a locker room. Something I was able to pull off, but that's another story for another time.) But it was still a huge, uncomfortable jolt seeing a locker room full of nude guys. (And I was planning to do everything possible to avoid showering with others.
It was expected that boys would shower at the end of class.
I'm curious what it was like for others being seeing locker room nudity for the first time.įor me, my first experience with locker room nudity came in 7th grade PE.
